My Story

My journey with breast cancer began in October of 2013 when I received that dreaded phone call containing the words no one ever wants to hear: “You have breast cancer”.

At that time, I didn't know anyone who had breast cancer, so the only information available to me was clinical data about chemotherapy drugs and their side effects. I believed I was prepared for my first treatment. However, I quickly realized I was mistaken, and I had to learn a very hard way.

When I went to my first chemotherapy treatment, I thought I knew what to expect, but in reality, it was much more difficult physically and emotionally.

I wish someone would have told me about personal care items like using baby soap and shampoo, soft chemo toothbrushes, special toothpaste, and many more simple but much-needed things.

This is what I know now that I wish I knew before:

  • Prepare to be there for a long time; bring a soft blanket, as the blankets you get at the clinic are kind of heavy and don’t keep you warm.

  • Bring an insulated cup with ice to chew on during the chemo treatment to prevent mouth sores. Yes, the chemo drugs cause very painful mouth sores, and the meds your doctor prescribes help with the symptoms but don’t prevent them. Just in case, get approval from your doctor before your first treatment.

  • Start treating your body like a newborn baby; use baby shampoo and natural soaps, a soft toothbrush and soothing natural toothpaste.

  • Bring a healthy snack and protein bars.

  • Ginger lemon drops are a must as they help with nausea.

  • Bring a notepad with the questions you want to ask your doctor and take notes during the appointment.

My daughter Vita was my patient advocate, constantly searching for tips and advice from many different sources. She was there for me when I needed something and couldn't even get out of bed, when I needed a shoulder to cry on, or just to get a hug.

Vita was the light in my heart that kept me fighting and lifted my spirits during the tough times of chemotherapy treatment and later through surgery.

Now, 10 years later, that light is still in my heart, and I want to extend it to everyone going through breast cancer treatment and needs a little help and support.

We, at Vita's Light, have a desire to help others in the same situation and give them a little comfort and support. Please join us; together we can make a difference in someone’s battle with breast cancer.
